Asociación de Familiares de Desaparecidos Judíos
When Asociación de familiares de desaparecidos judíos (Jewish Disappeared Relatives Association) began its work in 1998, one of its main priorities was to influence Israel’s public agenda by contacting members of the Israeli parliament. In August 2000, Naomi Blumenthal, a member of parliament, visited Chile and we invited her to Buenos Aires.

She met with the Mothers of the Disappeared for their weekly march outside the Casa Rosada, and although she was not fully aware of our history, she wore a white scarf on her head and marched along the streets with us. After the trip, Blumenthal returned to Israel and succeeded in making the Parliament approved the creation of the Israeli Commission for the Jewish Disappeared in Argentina.

The Commission collected testimonies in Israel, Europe and Argentina and produced a report containing recommendations to involve the Israeli public with the situation of Jewish communities abroad.

The Commission also organized the planting of trees in honour of the missing victims of state terrorism. The memorial was inaugurated in September 2003 in Israel, and we were invited by the Government to participate in the ceremony.

In December 2004, the Jewish Mutual Aid Association of Argentina (AMIA) organized a tribute to the Jewish victims of the military dictatorship. The event was attended by the Argentinean President Néstor Kirchner, the then-Senator Cristina Kirchner, the Governor of Buenos Aires Aníbal Ibarra, and members of the cabinet. A bronze sculpture entitled “Ellos están” (They are) was unveiled, created in honor of the event by Sara Brodsky, mother of a disappeared man.

Also dedicated to Jews who disappeared during the dictatorship is an area within “El Paseo de los Derechos Humanos”, or “The Walk of Human Rights”. Mrs. Brodsky also donated a sculpture of the face of her son with the words “One son, all sons” inscribed on the plaque. Her son, Fernando, disappeared on August 14, 1979, he was one of 1,900 Jewish victims among the total 30,000.
