The confrontation of different social visions, which characterized the
mobilization of the early 1970s and culminated in the coup d'etat of
1976, still impacts the construction of the democratic present.
Reflecting on that past and understanding the roots and motives of the
political violence that marked the period constitute a critical
component for the establishment of a solid democratic future. We believe
this involves accepting the challenge of asking questions about the
ideals and struggles that prompted a generation towards political
participation. It is also necessary to analyze the political projects
that sought structural change –including armed struggle- and the forms
of militancy that were put in practice toward that goal.
Confronting the difficulty of talking about frustrated
political projects, demonstrating the implementation of repressive force
during the dictatorship, and tracing the suffering and horror that state
terrorism left on the lives of individuals and society represent valid
strategies to critically incorporate the past into a present, which
remains full of doubts and unfulfilled promises.
Transmitting knowledge about this past is a necessary and
urgent task. Questions still resonate and new ones arise every day. Far
from arriving at definitive answers, we believe that memory is an open
process that facilitates revisiting past events and establishing new
connections with the present. These multiple forms of memories can be the
basis of a different political culture, one that allows our society to
move forward towards justice and the institutions that guarantee it.
The images that make up the exhibition are for
memory. Grouped together, they are intended to trigger those
impressions that Argentines share from the recent past. The purpose of the
exhibition is to invite reflection and a collective elaboration of our
past, and to support the search for answers. The exhibition narrative and
its meaning are complemented by the presence and questions of the visitors.

"imágenes para la memoria" includes a
collection of 250 letters that were compiled in order to demonstrate what
occurred in Argentina during the coup d'etat of 1976 through the
experiences of its protagonists. Denunciations, information requests,
official answers that demonstrate the bureaucracy of state terror,
communications from exile, jail and clandestine detention centers, testify
to the personal perspectives of the period and offers novel ways to learn
about the recent past.
This collection was achieved thanks to the support of
those who decided to share their written communications from the period.
These materials contribute to an understanding of a less well-known aspect
of the construction of the collective memory of state terrorism.
