WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The walls of silence erected around the role of Campo de Mayo during the period of State terrorism are, slowly, being eroded.

It is estimated that between 3,500 and 5,000 persons suffered illegal detention in this military garrison which, at the same time functioned in coordination with other military, police, gendarmerie and coastal naval command departments. The majority of persons detained in Zone 4 clandestine centers continue to be considered as having disappeared or were assassinated. For this reason, the uncertainty and the silence that protected the illegal repression, achieved more lasting effectiveness in Campo de Mayo.

Since the transition to democracy, the human rights and social organizations committed to the search for truth and justice, have denounced those responsible for State terrorism in the area on the basis of testimonials of survivors, the few "repentant" officers and compulsory witnesses to the horror.

Memoria Abierta has compiled a multimedia collection of testimonials, documents, photographs and territorial references of the role of Campo de Mayo during the period of State terrorism.

But we need to know much more. That is why we are offering a compilation of material that is informative and at the same time a call for sharing knowledge. The legal investigations on the crimes against humanity committed within this repressive circumstance have been advancing, albeit slowly and with difficulty. Three trials have already been held as a result of which the majority of the accused received life imprisonment. A fourth trial commenced a few days ago and further investigations are in process.

For this reason Campo de Mayo: The day of reckoning is a call for memory on less well known events and sites which, nevertheless, had a pivotal role in the deployment of the repressive strategy.

This project was carried out by Memoria Abierta with the financial assistance of the European Community.
